Health officials in Switzerland claim a 'fourth wave' of COVID infections is expected due to people who do not receive vaccinations in the coming months, according to reports.

With the country still in a state of lockdown, authorities have indicated they intend to keep masking and social distancing laws in place for the foreseeable future - even if a large percentage of the population is vaccinated.

"According to the task force model, it is to be expected that after the vaccination campaign has been completed, there will be another 'substantial wave of diseases' among those who do not want to be vaccinated and with it will come with additional illnesses and deaths. This is because the circulation of the virus cannot be prevented even with a high vaccination rate," 20 Minutes reports, citing the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

'Protective measures' will likely remain in place through summer and apply to everyone, regardless of vaccine status.

Ruth Humbel, President of the National Council Health Commission, rejects this plan in favor of a COVID passport and two-tiered society in which non-vaccinated people could effectively be barred from returning to any semblance of normal life.

“Parliament has decided that the Federal Council should work out the legal basis for a Covid-free certificate," Humbel said.

"As soon as everyone has been able to get vaccinated, it is no longer proportionate to further restrict the rights and freedoms of those who have been vaccinated or who have a negative test."

In regards to restaurants and public events, Humbel says, "If you don't want to be vaccinated or tested, you have to do without these things. We can no longer take these objectors into consideration."

Other National Councilors have offered mixed opinions about vaccinations and extended restrictions.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin recently asserted all international travelers entering or leaving Switzerland will eventually be required to show proof of having received a COVID vaccine.

When asked if the 'COVID crisis' would be considered over if everyone is jabbed, the Swiss president would not commit, saying there are questions about whether vaccinated people can still transmit the virus.

"This is why the rules of hygiene and distance will certainly apply for a while," he said.
